John Cage’s reflections on the nature sound, silence, and agency (among other many topics) had a definitive impact in the way in which composers approached their craft from the mid twentieth century until today. His music and the creative attitude behind it still remains a source of inspiration for younger generations of composers, performers and audiences. Purple Light is intended to be a humble tribute to Cage, his music, and his ideas. It was commissioned by the Society for New Music in New York and is dedicated to Brenna Ardner who premiered it in Syracuse in 2009.
